Understanding, Supporting, and Raising Awareness

April is dedicated to raising awareness about Parkinson’s disease — a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, balance, and coordination. While Parkinson’s impacts millions of individuals and families worldwide, greater awareness helps lead to earlier diagnosis, better care, and stronger support systems.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the nervous system that primarily affects movement. It develops when certain nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine begin to decline. Dopamine plays a key role in coordinating smooth and controlled muscle activity.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Tremors or shaking
  • Slowed movement (bradykinesia)
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Changes in balance and posture
  • Changes in speech or facial expression

Because symptoms often develop gradually, they can sometimes be mistaken for normal aging — making awareness especially important.

Why Awareness Matters

Parkinson’s disease affects not only those diagnosed, but also their families, caregivers, and communities. Increased awareness helps:

  • Encourage earlier recognition of symptoms
  • Reduce stigma and misunderstanding
  • Promote access to care and resources
  • Support ongoing research for improved treatments and, ultimately, a cure

The more we talk about Parkinson’s, the more we create a supportive and informed community.

Living Well with Parkinson’s

While there is currently no cure, many people with Parkinson’s live full, meaningful lives with the help of:

  • Medication and medical management
  • Physical therapy and regular movement
  • Speech and occupational therapy
  • Strong social and emotional support

Small daily routines, connection with others, and access to the right resources can make a significant difference.

How You Can Help

Parkinson’s Awareness Month is an opportunity for everyone to get involved:

  • Learn the signs and share information with others
  • Support those living with Parkinson’s and their caregivers
  • Participate in awareness events or fundraisers
  • Wear silver or gray to show support

Even simple conversations can create meaningful impact.

A Message of Support

To those living with Parkinson’s — and to the families and caregivers walking alongside them — you are not alone. Your strength, resilience, and courage are seen and deeply valued.

Awareness leads to understanding. Understanding leads to compassion. And compassion leads to better care for all.
